Slow Loris

Slow lorises are nocturnal animals that, as their name suggests, move very slowly. They have large eyes that allow them to see well even in dark environments. They live in trees and have strong hands that can grip branches firmly. They secrete a toxic substance near their elbows to protect themselves.

Species

Primates

It is one of the primates related to monkeys. However, it belongs to the “prosimians,” which have more primitive characteristics than the monkeys we commonly know.

Place of discovery

Southeast Asia

It is found primarily in the warm regions of Southeast Asia, such as Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand.

Habitat

Tropical rainforests and bamboo forests

Since they are arboreal animals, they prefer the high branches of dense tropical rainforests or bamboo groves.

Diet

Omnivore

Not only fruit and insects, but they also love **tree sap (gum)**. Occasionally, they catch and eat small birds or reptiles.

Action

Very slow and poisonous

As its name suggests, it moves very slowly to evade predators. It is the only primate that mixes secretions from near its armpits with saliva to produce venom.

Average size

20cm ~ 40cm

Although it varies by species, it is usually slightly larger than an adult’s palm. It is characterized by a tail that is so short it is barely visible.

Features

Endangered

As an internationally endangered species, its population has declined due to illegal hunting and trafficking, and it is now protected.

Lifespan

Ages 15–20

They live longer in a protected environment than in the wild. Considering their small size, they have a relatively long lifespan.
