Zoolung! Nice to meet you.
I used to worry whether my introverted personality was suited for a career as a zookeeper, but after meeting so many people at Zoolungzoolung, I’ve become more outgoing and smile more often. My name is Berry, and I’m a “Guardian of Life” at the Zoolungzoolung Gyeongju branch.
Very Good!

Koi
The koi is a type of carp, and its most distinctive feature is its vibrant colors and patterns. It boasts a variety of patterns that blend white, red, black, and other colors. Because they have a gentle temperament and tend to be friendly toward people, they are very popular as ornamental fish. They are highly adaptable to their environment and can thrive in a relatively wide range of water temperatures.

Wallaby
Wallabies are cousins of kangaroos and are sometimes called “little kangaroos.” Males sometimes clench their fists and strike a pose as if throwing a punch to show off. Like kangaroos, females have a pouch for raising their young. Their long tails play a crucial role in maintaining balance when they stand on two legs. Also, since they lack sweat glands, they lick their bodies with saliva to cool down when it’s hot.

Coati
It’s also called the “long-nosed mole” because of its long nose. It uses this long nose to dig through the ground and easily find the insects hiding inside. The coati’s nostrils are always moist, to the point where snot drips from them. This prevents dirt from getting into its nose while searching for food underground and helps remove any dirt that does get in. A constant runny nose is a sign of good health, and a moist nose helps it smell better. Coatis are expert tree climbers. Their long tails help them maintain balance while climbing, so they rarely fall even from tall trees.

Meerkat
Meerkats take turns standing guard during the day to protect their colony. Because they constantly look around, they’ve earned the nickname “guardians of the desert.” The fur around a meerkat’s eyes is black to absorb sunlight and protect their eyes in the harsh desert environment. It’s the same reason baseball players paint the area under their eyes black. It’s essential for staying alert in the desert!
1. Self-Introduction
2. What is your most memorable moment?
I’ll always remember when explorers—whether they were in the middle of an expedition or had just finished one—would see me and the other caretakers, and tell their families or me, “I want to be a caretaker when I grow up!”
Hearing those words made for a truly heartwarming day, even after I got home.
3. What are Zoolungman’s top tips for exploring Gyeongju?
If you have any questions while exploring the Gyeongju branch, please feel free to ask Zoolungman! Even if your question isn’t specifically about animals, I’ll be happy to answer it to the best of my ability!
Life Guardians especially love sharing what they know when they receive questions about animals~
